Thermal Mass Flowmeters for Gas, Compressed Air & Large Ducts

Thermal mass measurement is a major industrial category for compressed-air management, combustion-air systems, air ducts, wastewater aeration, process gas and stack flows. AMAC reviews insertion and inline measurement, OEM Kurz model identification and technical service packages for Saudi plants and EPC contractors.

Thermal mass flow: principle and applications

The heated sensor is cooled by gas motion; the measured heat-transfer response is correlated to mass flow or defined standard gas volume. Unlike a simple water flow sensor, a thermal gas sensor is configured for a specific gas or mixture and reference conditions. This technology is useful for suitable clean, dry air/gas and large ducts, but unstable gas mixtures, condensation and deposits can undermine calibration and repeatability.

Compressed-air measurement

Define whether the target is compressor discharge, dryer outlet, branch line usage, leak monitoring or mass/normalized volume reporting. State pressure, temperature, humidity, flow rate in kg/h, Nm³/h or SCFM and the exact reference conditions. A change in gas composition or moisture may be an additional uncertainty, not automatically a sensor fault.

Combustion air, ducts and gas lines

  • Round/rectangular duct dimensions, traverse/profile quality and accessible straight section.
  • Thermal sensor insertion length, nozzle size, cross-duct support and vibration requirements.
  • Gas mixture for boiler flue gas, process gas, flare gas, wet gas or ambient combustion air.
  • Sensor range in mass flow, standard volume or velocity; define reference P/T for SFPM/Nm³/h.
  • Site explosion/heat classification, ambient and process temperature, output protocols, maintenance access.
  • For large non-uniform duct profiles, evaluate multipoint K-BAR versus single-point insertion uncertainty.

Gas fiscal measurement is a different duty

Commercial natural-gas custody transfer may require an ultrasonic, turbine or DP primary meter, a properly configured flow computer, gas chromatograph/composition information, pressure and temperature correction and approved measurement standards. A thermal mass probe must not be substituted for an accepted fiscal metering train by assumption.
