Industrial Flowmeter Types: Selection by Fluid, Pipe Size & Duty
A practical flowmeter technology guide for Saudi industrial procurement and project engineers. Start with the fluid and duty: magnetic for conductive water, Liquid Controls positive displacement and turbine for diesel, clamp-on ultrasonic for suitable pipes, thermal mass for dry gases, and vortex/DP for steam. Instrument selection should follow actual process data, not brand alone.

Which flowmeter is right for your application?
| Flowmeter technology | Typical Saudi industrial applications | Important technical qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Electromagnetic / mag | Conductive water, wastewater, brine, slurry | Conductivity; liner and electrode; full pipe; grounding. Not for diesel. |
| Positive-displacement / LC rotary | Diesel, gasoline, fuel transfer/loading | Viscosity; strainers, air elimination, register and proving; no entrained gas. |
| Liquid turbine | Clean diesel, light hydrocarbons, loading skids | Viscosity, flow profile, meter factor, strainer and turndown. |
| Inline transit-time ultrasonic | Clean liquid piping, utility water | Acoustic path, gas bubbles, straight runs, pressure and temperature. |
| Portable / fixed clamp-on ultrasonic | Water distribution, temporary flow survey | Pipe material, OD, wall, lining, liquid acoustics, access and coupling. |
| Doppler ultrasonic | Liquids with appropriate suspended particles/bubbles | Reflectors needed, suitability and uncertainty must be checked. |
| Coriolis mass | Diesel, chemicals, dosing, certain gases | Mass and density, vibration, pressure drop and tube material. |
| Thermal mass insertion/inline | Dry compressed air, industrial gases, duct air | Gas composition, moisture, profiles and insertion alignment. |
| Vortex shedding | Steam, clean gases, selected liquids | Minimum velocity/Reynolds range, vibration, steam density correction. |
| DP orifice / Venturi / flow nozzle | Steam, process gases and liquids | Primary element beta, impulse lines, pressure loss and square-root extraction. |
| Averaging Pitot / Annubar | Large air ducts, gas or utility lines | Velocity profile, straight run, DP signal and installation orientation. |
| Variable-area / rotameter | Local visual flow for liquids/gases | Vertical mounting, density, pressure, wetted parts, calibration. |
| Open-channel / weir / flume | Wastewater channels and treatment works | Hydraulic primary device, head level sensor, approach conditions. |
| Oval-gear / gear PD | Lube oil, chemicals, viscous liquid transfer | Product compatibility, gear clearances, cleanliness and range. |
| Insertion electromagnetic | Large water lines with conductive media | Insertion depth, pipe profile, local velocity vs full-bore accuracy. |
| Multiphase / wet-gas / ultrasonic gas | Specialized oil & gas production/metering | Fluid composition, regimes, proving, project-specific standards. |
High-priority buying routes
Water and wastewater: Start with a full-bore electromagnetic flowmeter for electrically conductive liquids. In non-invasive retrofit or temporary surveys, consider clamp-on ultrasonic if pipe and fluid conditions are suitable.
Diesel fuel: Start with LC M-series rotary PD meters for transfer/loading requirements; turbine meters for suitable clean, low-viscosity flows. Use Coriolis where mass/density, higher measurement performance or process suitability warrants it.
Air and gas: Compare thermal mass gas meters for stable gas composition, vortex for suitable clean gas/steam, DP for established engineered lines, and gas ultrasonic or custody systems for specified metering duties.
Pipe diameter, service and sizing
AMAC accepts RFQs from small bore DN15/DN25 to large DN1200 water lines and wider ranges where the chosen manufacturer supports them. Diameter alone cannot determine meter suitability: velocity at minimum/normal/maximum flow, internal pipe bore, piping arrangement, pressure loss, liner/flange rating and required uncertainty must all be checked. State whether the nominal diameter is metric DN or NPS inch and supply pipe schedule or internal diameter where needed.
Common enquiry sizes include DN25, DN40, DN50, DN80, DN100, DN150, DN200, DN250, DN300, DN400, DN600 and DN1200. This is an enquiry scope, not a claim that every family or manufacturer provides every size.
Buying specifications and procurement risks
- Identify medium, composition, suspended solids, viscosity/conductivity and hazardous-area classification; water and diesel must not be treated as interchangeable.
- Confirm actual and standard volumetric units, mass flow units, temperature/pressure compensation and fiscal/custody-transfer acceptance if required.
- Specify minimum/normal/maximum flow, turndown, pipe OD and ID, installation length, power supply, signal: 4–20 mA/HART/Modbus/pulse, register and SCADA protocol.
- Request manufacturer calibration certificate or accredited calibration only where required and actually offered; do not assume legal metrology approval from technology name.
- For replacement items, supply complete model code, nameplate photo, connection and software/firmware requirements.
Model and brand references for identifying replacement instruments
Examples of families whose OEM documentation can guide technical comparison: Endress+Hauser Proline Promag W 400; Siemens SITRANS MAG 8000; KROHNE OPTISONIC 6300 P, OPTIMASS 6400 and OPTISWIRL 4200; Liquid Controls M-Series M-5/M-7/M-10/M-15/M-25. Models are not offered as interchangeable equivalents without a full application and specification check.
