Flow Computers, Volume Correction & Industrial Metering Skids
A flow computer is the calculation and audit component behind many liquid and gas metering systems. It receives signals from flowmeters, pressure, temperature and sometimes gas composition instruments, applies the correct calculation/compensation standard and sends measured totals to plant systems. AMAC can evaluate instrumentation BOQs for gas measurement, diesel loading and EPC packages.

What the flow computer does
Typical inputs include turbine or PD pulse/K-factor, ultrasonic meter diagnostics, differential pressure, static pressure, RTD temperature, density and gas composition. Depending on the certified application, the computer calculates corrected volume, standard volume, mass/energy or batch totals using applicable API/ASTM or AGA/ISO standards. It can maintain meter run totals, event logs, alarm states and communications with a PLC/SCADA or metering supervisory system.
Process metering vs custody transfer
| Use | Typical components | Approval / acceptance |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel tanker loading | LC PD or turbine meter, air eliminator/strainer, register and batch controller | Commercial volume basis, proving, documentation and end-user standard |
| Natural gas metering | Ultrasonic/turbine/DP flowmeter plus P/T/composition inputs | AGA/ISO gas compensation, local regulatory requirements and gas quality |
| Process gas utility monitoring | Thermal mass, vortex or DP measurement integrated into DCS | Process performance versus fiscal standard must be defined |
| Steam energy metering | Vortex or DP, P/T compensation and energy calculation | Steam quality, enthalpy, load profile and audit reporting |
| Liquid allocation / custody | Flow computer, meter runs, proving, densitometer if required | Application-specific API/ASTM/OIML and witnessed tests |
Representative computerized metering reference
Emerson FloBoss S600+: panel-mount flow computer series intended for fiscal/custody transfer, batch loading and meter proving configurations. Technical selection must confirm number of meter runs, supported calculation standards, I/O cards, communications, redundancy and any existing configuration/database. An instrument name is not evidence that a specific configuration supports every gas or fuel standard.
Procurement requirements for a complete package
- Number of meter runs, primary meter type (LC PD, turbine, ultrasonic, orifice, Coriolis) and calibration factor.
- Gas composition/density, pressure/temperature inputs and standard volume reference units.
- Requested API, ASTM, AGA, ISO or local standard; liquid and gas algorithms must be correctly configured.
- Batch loading, permissives, ESD, proving reports, security, audit trails and role permissions where applicable.
- I/O counts, pulse frequency, analog 4–20 mA, HART, Modbus TCP/RTU, serial and network design.
- Cabinet/shelter, hazardous-area protection, power/UPS and field wiring.
- Functional design specification, metering software configuration, FAT/SAT, loop-check and training deliverables.
Metering skid: full package vs replacement component
Procurement can request an individual computer, replacement CPU/I/O module, firmware/service, or a fully engineered meter skid including fluid conditioning, valves, meters, pressure/temperature instrumentation, analyzer, controls and custody/reporting systems. These are fundamentally different scopes. Provide a P&ID and instrument index, and specify whether software/data migration and calibration/proving are expected.
Information required for a reliable technical quotation
- Metering liquid or gas, legal/fiscal vs operational use, governing calculation standard
- Number of runs, primary meter type, pressure/temp/density/composition inputs
- Existing flow computer make/model and full part code, firmware/software compatibility
- System interfaces, reporting, proving and cyber/role requirements
- Complete skid/P&ID, cabinet/HSE, FAT/SAT and commissioning plan
- Quantities, I/O matrix and Saudi project location
