Electromagnetic (Mag) Flowmeters for Water & Wastewater
For conductive drinking water, utility water, sewage, desalination plant process water, reclaimed water and many slurry applications, a correctly selected full-bore electromagnetic flowmeter is frequently the best industrial choice. AMAC can support Saudi water utility and plant enquiries by DN size, pipework, media compatibility, signal and approvals.

When a magnetic flowmeter is the strongest option
Magmeters use Faraday induction to measure average fluid velocity without a restrictive moving measuring element. Typical targets are water treatment intake/distribution, utility plant supply/return, wastewater treatment, pump stations, RO feed and conductive brines. They are particularly relevant when solids or corrosive fluids make mechanical meters unattractive, provided liner, electrode and maintenance conditions are suitable.
Essential limitation: conventional electromagnetic meters require electrical conductivity. They do not normally measure diesel, petrol, demineralized very-low-conductivity water or nonconductive hydrocarbons. Manufacturer thresholds vary; many standard devices require approximately 5 µS/cm. Do not specify a magmeter for petroleum fuel simply because its pipe size matches.
Municipal water and industrial model families
| Representative OEM family | Relevant application | Specification to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Endress+Hauser Proline Promag W 400 | Municipal/industrial drinking water and wastewater | Specific liner/electrodes, pressure rating, transmitter interface, IP and approval variant |
| Siemens SITRANS MAG 8000 | Battery- or mains-capable water networks and revenue/remote reading | DN 25–1200 family scope, pulse/communications, battery lifecycle and current legal approvals |
| KROHNE WATERFLUX / OPTIFLUX | Utility, treatment and process water systems | Choose exact series and size based on conductivity, pressure and installation needs |
| Alternative approved project make/model | Plant, EPC or water authority procurement | Existing reference, equivalency rules, approved vendor list and TBE required |
Pipe size and installation checklist
- Supply DN25/50/80/100/150/200/300/400/600/1200 or the actual specified size, with pipe ID and flange ASME/EN rating.
- Measure minimum, normal and maximum flow; verify that pipe velocity remains within the selected meter’s validated range.
- Select EPDM/hard rubber/PTFE or manufacturer-supported liner to suit drinking water, chemicals, cleaning and temperature; select electrode alloy accordingly.
- Confirm full-pipe orientation, air pockets, partially filled drains, empty-pipe alarm and minimum upstream/downstream clearance per exact OEM installation guide.
- Check grounding rings/ground electrodes, cathodic protection, buried/immersed IP ratings, remote converter cable and EMC.
- Determine 24 VDC/230 VAC or battery power, pulse/4–20 mA/HART/Modbus/SCADA requirements and data logging.
Accuracy and regulated water revenue measurement
For billed water or legal metrology, require the exact meter’s current OIML R49/MID/other local acceptance, selected diameter and specific variant evidence; do not infer approval simply from an OEM brand. Commissioning, as-found checks, meter verification and independent flow calibration are different deliverables. Define whether the quote covers meter only, installation, wiring, configuration and commissioning.
