Radar & Guided Wave Level Transmitters for Tanks and Process Vessels
AMAC supports technical enquiries for non-contact radar, guided-wave radar (GWR/TDR), ultrasonic, differential-pressure, hydrostatic and point-level devices. Instrument selection is based on the medium, tank geometry, foam and vapor conditions, process pressure, hazardous-area classification and the control-system interface—not by level range alone.

Select the appropriate level measurement principle
Non-contact radar
A radar sensor measures reflected microwave signals from the material surface, useful in many liquids and bulk solids applications. Evaluate nozzle geometry, obstructions, dielectric properties, vapor, foam, agitators and antenna selection.
Guided-wave radar (GWR)
A rod, cable or coaxial probe guides the radar pulse; useful for liquid level and selected interface applications. Confirm probe length, coating/buildup tendency, tank internals and the allowable pressure/temperature range.
Hydrostatic / differential pressure
Level can be derived from measured liquid head when density is sufficiently known or compensated. Discuss varying density, tank pressure, diaphragm seals, capillaries and wet-leg/dry-leg requirements.
Point-level switches
Vibrating fork, float, capacitance and other switches provide high-high, low-low or inventory signals where a continuous trend is not required. Separate safety functions from ordinary operations in the RFQ.
Manufacturer and model-family reference list
These examples support buyer cross-references; their current lifecycle and full ordering codes must be checked.
| Reference family | Principle | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| VEGA VEGAPULS 6X | Non-contact radar | Liquids and bulk solids |
| VEGA VEGAFLEX 81 / 86 | Guided-wave radar | Liquids; 86 for demanding processes |
| Emerson Rosemount 5408 | Non-contact radar | Liquid/solid level in vessels |
| Siemens SITRANS LR radar families | Radar | Tanks/silos; confirm active successor model |
Diesel, water and chemical tank applications
A diesel bulk tank may require continuous level, temperature, volume calculation, high-high alarms and inventory reconciliation. Water tanks may prioritize pump control and low/high limits. Process vessels can require special antenna materials, high pressure, steam compensation or interface detection. Tank shape and strapping tables matter when converting height to volume.
Technical RFQ checklist

- Vessel height, nozzle dimension, internal obstacles and mounting location
- Temperature, pressure, hazardous zone and material compatibility
- Measurement span, required uncertainty, display and probe/antenna configuration
- 4–20 mA/HART, Modbus, relay or other integration interfaces
- Existing OEM model or serial number and requested replacement/interchangeability checks
What is the difference between radar level and guided-wave radar?
Non-contact radar looks down at the surface without a contacting probe; GWR sends its signal along a probe. The better choice depends on process obstacles, interface requirements, foam, buildup and installation constraints. Neither technology should be selected by frequency alone.
