Natural Gas Ultrasonic, Turbine & Metering Flowmeters

Industrial gas flowmeasurement requires clear separation of operational volumetric measurement, gas utility monitoring, allocation and regulated fiscal custody transfer. AMAC reviews gas ultrasonic, turbine and DP metering quotations alongside pressure/temperature correction, gas quality and flow computers for Saudi refinery, petrochemical and EPC customers.

Selecting a natural gas measuring technology

Meter principleRelevant scopeKey risk/selection
Inline gas ultrasonic two-pathUtility and process gas; certain models intended for non-custody dutiesGas condition, acoustics, flow profile, approvals
Multirun / multipath gas ultrasonicHigh-performance transmission/custody measurement with approved modelCalibration and meter run design, diagnostics, wet-gas risk
Gas turbineClean dry natural gas with valid flow-rate and pressure rangesBearings, low flow, cleanliness and gas quality
Differential pressure (orifice/Annubar)Engineered gas metering and measurement with compensationSquare-root calculation, primary device, impulse lines, pressure loss
Thermal massCompressed air, stable-mixture process gas or combustion airGas-specific calibration, moisture, non-fiscal duty unless approved

OEM model families for identification

KROHNE OPTISONIC 7300: two-path gas ultrasonic meter for natural and process gases; OEM describes non-custody-transfer natural gas applications. Emerson Rosemount 3414: multipath ultrasonic gas family for fiscal duty, with required flow calibration and project acceptance. Endress+Hauser Prosonic Flow G 300: multivariable natural/process-gas ultrasonic reference. These models have different certifications and design limits. Do not quote one as direct equivalent to another from DN alone.

Actual versus standard gas volume and energy

State whether the customer requires actual m³/h, standardized Sm³/h or normalized Nm³/h and define the reference pressure, reference temperature, gas compressibility and gas heating value if energy is needed. A flow computer may apply accepted AGA, ISO and other standards using pressure, temperature and gas composition. This can be a regulated metering system rather than a single instrument replacement.

Installation and commercial metrology

  • Pipe DN/ID, pressure class, gas pressure/temperature, gas constituents and possible condensation/liquid carryover.
  • Minimum/normal/max actual flow, operating viscosity and density, required uncertainty and rangeability.
  • Available upstream/downstream straight run, flow conditioner, valves, turbulence and vibration.
  • Meter run calibration, diagnostic interfaces, flow computer integration and approved calculation standards.
  • Hazardous area, material selection, NACE and plant HSE/pressure code requirements.
  • Fiscal/billing status, approved meter standards, proving/verification and FAT/SAT evidence.

Complete gas metering packages

Full scope may include ultrasonic/turbine meter, upstream meter run, instrumentation manifolds, pressure/temperature sensors, gas chromatograph or analyzer, flow computer, ESD interface, electrical cabling, control panel and commissioning. Compare thermal mass gas flowmeters only where application and gas stability justify the technology.

What to provide for quotation

  • Gas composition, methane/CO2/H2S range, moisture and operating temperature
  • Actual and normalized flow at defined P/T reference; project max/min pressure
  • Pipe bore, flange, ANSI pressure rating and installation run
  • Process utility or custody-transfer duty, applicable standards and calibration
  • Flow computer, gas analysis, P/T compensation and integration scope
  • OEM model/serial, number of meters and Saudi project site
