Vortex Flowmeters for Steam, Gas & Industrial Utilities
Steam utility metering is an application where a vortex flowmeter may provide a robust inline solution, provided minimum velocity, Reynolds number, vibration and process conditions are suitable. AMAC can assist with technical selection for steam headers, plant utilities, boilers and process gas projects.

Vortex measurement and where it fits
A bluff body generates a train of alternating vortices, whose shedding frequency is related to fluid velocity. The method works on suitably developed flows of steam, clean gases and liquids. Incorrect pipe sizing, low flow, wet steam, acoustic interference or mechanical vibration can compromise performance; an OEM sizing check should be part of any proposal.
Saturated vs superheated steam
For saturated steam, density may be calculated from measured temperature or pressure using accepted steam relationships. Superheated steam generally requires additional temperature and pressure information for mass-flow/energy calculation. A plain volumetric meter is not automatically a compensated mass or heat-metering package. Clearly specify wetness, steam pressure/temperature, enthalpy/energy report and condensate conditions.
Representative OEM technologies
| Reference | Application | Selection detail |
|---|---|---|
| KROHNE OPTISWIRL 4200 | Saturated/superheated steam, gases and liquids with compatible variants | DN15–DN300 flanged product-family range; verify P+T/energy features against exact variant |
| KROHNE OPTISWIRL 5080 | Higher-temperature industrial vortex duties | Verify max temp, pressure class, electronics mounting and OEM range |
| Other vortex flow transmitters | Steam/gas metering in approved plant standards | End-user make/model list, K factor, communications and diagnostics |
| DP orifice/nozzle or ultrasonic alternatives | Low-/high-flow regimes or site-specific engineered duties | Installation constraints, allowable pressure loss and uncertainty |
Steam piping and installation specification
- Steam quality (saturated/superheated), actual pressure, maximum temperature and flow range in t/h or kg/h.
- Pipe DN, schedule/ID, flange ANSI/EN class, pressure loss and allowable process shutdown.
- Upstream/downstream straight-run lengths, vibration source, valve/bend proximity and pipe insulation.
- 4–20 mA/HART/Modbus or pulse/totalizer, pressure/temperature correction, energy calculation.
- Condensate management and safe installation orientation recommended by OEM.
- Any fiscal/utility billing requirement, accepted proving/calibration and as-built documentation.
What a steam RFQ should not omit
Include steam tables reference basis, flow unit, design/max line conditions, available instrument air/electrical power and whether the utility KPI is volumetric flow, true mass flow or energy consumption. For high-temperature duties, confirm sensor type, remote electronics and thermal protection. Use pressure/DP transmitters where corrections or alternative DP flow measurement are required.
