Portable & Fixed Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flowmeters
Non-invasive ultrasonic flow measurement helps industrial plants measure suitable water and process liquids without interrupting a line. A portable meter can be useful for pump surveys, temporary verification, troubleshooting and metering feasibility; permanent clamp-on installations support process monitoring where cutting or welding pipework is not practical.

When clamp-on is a good solution
Portable survey: temporary measurement of water lines, pumps, cooling networks, chilled water, process transfers and comparative readings near existing meters. Fixed clamp-on: monitoring on process lines requiring non-invasive sensor mounting. Confirm the process liquid is compatible with the ultrasonic method: entrained gas, pipe lining, unsuitable pipe material, very low flow and limited straight length can degrade results.
Transit-time meters generally suit liquids that transmit a stable acoustic signal. Doppler-type meters require appropriate suspended reflectors; these are distinct measuring principles and cannot be exchanged solely on the basis of pipe size.
Representative models and accessories
| Reference | Purpose | Important technical check |
|---|---|---|
| KROHNE OPTISONIC 6300 P | Portable battery-powered transit-time clamp-on liquid meter | OEM describes portability, data logging and pipe sizes up to DN4000 depending sensors/variant |
| KROHNE OPTISONIC 6300 | Permanent clamp-on ultrasonic liquid measurement | Sensor rails, converter, probe temperature rating and mounting configuration |
| UFC 300 P / compatible transducers | Portable converter and appropriate transducer rail packages | Specify exact converter revision and sensor/rail kit; complete set may include cables, coupling, mounting straps and case |
| Other approved OEM packages | Single/dual-path transit-time ultrasonic | Pipe/material/calibration/outputs determine suitability |
Sizing: DN15 to DN4000 is not one sensor set
Portable systems typically use several transducer ranges, frequencies or mounts for smaller and larger diameter lines. For example, the OPTISONIC 6300 P family supports DN15–4000 in the OEM product description, but the supplied transducers and rail accessories must match the actual diameter range. A request for DN200–DN600 needs different physical components from many DN25–DN150 cases. Do not buy “a portable ultrasonic flowmeter” without confirming the complete clamp-on transducer/fixture set.
Prepare pipe and flow information
- External diameter, wall thickness, schedule, pipe material, coating/liner and accessible mounting length.
- Fluid type, process temperature, expected bubbles/solids, sound velocity or information for automatic configuration.
- Minimum/normal/max volumetric flow and number of meter installations or measurement sites.
- Required features: rechargeable battery, logger, thermal energy, 4–20 mA/pulse output, Bluetooth/software and calibration documentation.
- Transducer rails, straps, mounting grease/couplant, cable lengths, case and safe-area/access restrictions.
Measurement reliability
Correctly entering the internal bore and wall thickness is essential to velocity-to-volume calculations. Clamp-on measurement can be excellent for suitable conditions, but no reading should be advertised as custody-transfer approved unless the selected OEM version, installation and regulatory approval explicitly establish it. For legally billed transfer, verify a fit-for-purpose inline meter or approved metering arrangement.
