Coriolis Mass Flowmeters for Diesel, Chemicals & Process Fluids
Coriolis instruments directly measure mass flow and commonly provide density and process-temperature variables, making them important for chemical dosing, refined-fuel transfer, blending and many demanding liquid applications. The right choice depends on fluid properties, line size, uncertainty, pressure drop, entrained gas, vibration and available budget.

Where Coriolis provides real process value
For diesel and hydrocarbon blending, direct mass measurement can simplify calculations that otherwise rely on density/temperature corrections. For chemical dosing, one meter may support mass and density reporting. For selected gas applications, check gas density, pressure and minimum mass flow limits carefully: a large nominal pipe does not guarantee a suitable Coriolis size or affordable pressure drop.
A manufacturer option for “custody-transfer-capable” does not prove that the specific SKU has a legal metrology approval or that a site installation meets acceptance conditions.
Representative OEM series and considerations
| Family example | Indicative use | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| KROHNE OPTIMASS 1400 | General liquids and selected process gases | Check tube configuration, process connection, meter sizing and diagnostic package |
| KROHNE OPTIMASS 6400 | Advanced oil/gas, chemicals and difficult process duties | Check actual diameter, high temperature/pressure and any required approvals |
| Siemens SITRANS FC330 | Process mass flow, density and temperature | Select actual line and electronics version; verify project approved list |
| Other approved Coriolis OEM | Chemical injection, fuel blending, custody/skid metering | Compare pressure drop, repeatability, calibration and process wetted parts |
Sizing and process limitations
- Min, normal and peak mass flow; specify kg/h, t/h, kg/min and required turn-down.
- Liquid density/viscosity, flow pressure and temperature envelope; entrained gas percentage if known.
- Permissible pressure drop, pump NPSH consequences, vibration and mechanical support.
- Dual-tube vs straight-tube design, cleaning/CIP and erosion/corrosion considerations.
- Output and system integration 4–20 mA, HART, pulse, Modbus and Ethernet only if supported by variant.
- Hazardous area, Ex type and materials certificate/approved vendor requirements.
Fuel: PD, turbine or Coriolis?
LC PD meters are attractive for many refined-fuel volumetric transfer duties and compatible registers. Turbine meters are often evaluated for suitable clean low-viscosity fuel. Coriolis fits when mass/density, batch control, repeatability and fluid range justify cost, line sizing and pressure drop. Request a documented technical comparison against the same process datasheet.
Calibration and FAT
Define whether the bid needs a manufacturer’s factory mass-flow calibration, field verification, witnessed FAT, density check or regulatory proving. The accepted uncertainty, range and test fluid can differ between these activities. Include any calibration point count, environmental conditions, documentation, traceability and witness requirements in the RFQ.
